Perplexity walked away from ads. What that tells advertisers about AI ad inventory

News analysis: Perplexity pulled back from advertising, saying ads undermined trust in its answers. What that means for ChatGPT ads, Google's AI placements and businesses planning AI advertising budgets.

The short answer

Perplexity tested sponsored follow-up questions, then pulled back from advertising, with an executive telling the Financial Times that ads made users question its answers. The lesson for advertisers: AI platforms will protect answer trust first, so ads will stay separate and labeled. Advertisers win with credible, useful landing pages, not with ads disguised as answers.

What happened

Perplexity began testing ads in 2024, mostly as sponsored follow-up questions. By late 2025 it had started pulling them, and in February 2026 reports quoted an executive telling the Financial Times that ads made users doubt the answers. Perplexity described itself as being in the accuracy business and leaned on subscriptions instead.

Why it matters even if you never advertised on Perplexity

Every AI assistant faces the same tension. If people suspect an answer was bought, the product stops working. OpenAI's answer has been strict separation: ads below the answer, labeled as sponsored, with a stated policy that ads don't influence responses. Expect that separation to hold, and to tighten.

  • Ads will not become answers. No platform will let a business buy a recommendation. Earned visibility and paid placement stay separate.
  • Inventory will stay limited. Platforms protecting trust will keep ad loads light, which supports prices over time.
  • Quality pages win. When the ad is clearly an ad, the landing page has to do the convincing.
Inside the answer or beside it
Perplexity's sponsored follow-ups sat inside the answer, and users started to doubt it. Ads kept below the answer, and labeled, leave the answer trusted.

What to do

Run paid and organic as two separate programs. Paid: a ChatGPT ads test with honest, useful landing pages. Organic: the AI visibility work that gets your business named in the answers themselves.
