How to sell your company's data to AI companies

A step-by-step guide for operating companies that want to license proprietary data to AI labs and data buyers: what buyers want, how deals are structured, rights and privacy, and how to start.

The short answer

Inventory what data you hold, confirm you have the rights to license it, remove or protect personal information, and describe the work it captures. Then approach AI labs and data buyers confidentially, usually with a sample under NDA, and license defined data for a defined use. Most deals are licenses, not sales, and you keep ownership.

Why AI companies want operating data

Models learned to write from the public internet. Agents that do real work need something the internet doesn't have: records of how work actually gets done. How a support ticket was resolved, how a contract was revised, how an estimate was priced, how a project was approved. That is the everyday exhaust of an operating business, and AI buyers are paying to license it.

The steps

  1. InventoryList the systems you use and how many years of history each holds: CRM, ticketing, documents, code, communications.
  2. Confirm rightsCheck customer contracts, privacy notices and employee policies. Our rights checklist covers what to look for.
  3. Protect personal informationPlan how personal data will be removed, masked or excluded before anything leaves the building.
  4. Describe the workBuyers buy workflows, not files. Explain what decisions, revisions and outcomes the data shows.
  5. Approach buyers confidentiallyShare a description first, then a small sample under NDA, then negotiate scope and terms.
  6. License, don't sellGrant defined rights for a defined use and period. Keep ownership and the right to license elsewhere where possible.
How a license comes together
Buyers see a description before any data, then a small protected sample, then terms. Nothing is shared without the owner's authorization.

What makes data valuable

Buyers look for records of decisions and outcomes, connected across systems, over several years, at real scale, that nobody else can offer, with clean rights. We break this down in what your data is worth to AI buyers and what data AI companies actually buy.

From everyday systems to a licensed dataset
Records you already keep become a defined dataset once rights are confirmed and personal information is removed. You license it and keep ownership.

Ways to sell

You can list on a data marketplace, work through a broker, sell during a wind-down, negotiate directly or use an advisor. Each has trade-offs, reviewed in AI data sale options compared.

Frequently asked questions

Do I lose ownership of my data?

Not in a license. You grant defined rights for a defined use and keep ownership. Terms vary, so the scope of use, exclusivity and duration are negotiated.

Can AI buyers see my customers' personal information?

They shouldn't. Personal information is typically removed, masked or excluded before data is shared, and the deal terms should require it.

How long does a data licensing deal take?

It depends on preparation. Rights review and data preparation usually take longer than finding an interested buyer.
