What happened
OpenAI began testing ads with US Free and Go users in early 2026. Since then it has opened self-serve buying, added click-based bidding and expanded internationally. PPC Land reported on October 21, 2026 that 26 more markets, mostly in Latin America, were added, for a total of 89, and that more than 100,000 advertisers have run at least one campaign. That figure is cumulative, not a count of active advertisers.
Why the headline number is misleading for local businesses
A hundred thousand advertisers sounds crowded. Spread across 89 markets and every category from software to sneakers, it is not. What a local service business competes with is the handful of HVAC companies, law firms or dental practices bidding on the same situations in the same area. In most US metros, that is still very few.
